Tämä koira, juuri sellaisena kuin se on, edustaa täydellisesti ympäristöönsä sopeutunutta tyyppiä; alas keskittynyt painopiste, johtuen matalasta korkeudesta, turvaa sille äärimmäisen tasapainon jyrkissä rinteissä. Sen ahtaat raajat litteiden käpälien kanssa pitävät kallioilla kuin canvaskenkien pohjat. Sen kintereet, jotka ovat lievässä poikkeamassa sen takaosan linjasta, ovat välttämättömät rinteillä kiipeilemiseen. (Yritäpä itse kävellä vuorilla jalat sisäänpäin kääntyneinä.)

Turkin laatu, villava alta ja karheampi päältä, antaa suojan ankaralle kaatosateelle ja kylmälle säälle. Sen verrattoman levoton tarmokkuus tekee sen kykeneväksi suoriutumaan kovasta työstään ilman epävarmuutta. Sen pieni koko sallii omistajan ruokkia sitä niukasti.

Mitä luonteeseen tulee, meidän nähden sillä on varsin itsenäinen luonne, jonka perustana on epäluuloisuus. Ei kovin hemmoteltu, kehittynyt sitkeäksi ja useimmiten vieraiden vaikeasti lähestyttävä. Se osoittaa tiettyä varovaisuutta tuttuja kohtaan kotona. On kuitenkin yksi asia, mikä saa sen unohtamaan varautuneisuutensa: kun kimeä paimenpillin vihellys kertoo sille, että on toiminnan aika.

Lisäksi pyreneittenpaimenkoira on rohkea. Harvoin näkee sen kieltäytyvän tappelemasta itseään isomman ja korkeamman kanssa. Sitäpaitsi, se on haastaja olemalla yleensä suorastaan riidanhaluinen. Ketteränä se harvoin tarrautuu kiinni, mutta se toimii peräkkäisin, taitavin väistöin ja kiihkein, odottamattomin hyökkäyksin, samalla kun tarkat puraisut osuvat vastustajaan.

Pyreneittenpaimenkoiralla kaikki klassinen tyyli on jätetty pois sen työskentelystä. Sillä ei ole selvästi määriteltyä tarkoitusta. Pyreneittenpaimenkoira on paimenkoira läpikotaisin ja se on riittävästi kaikkiin sen tehtäviin. Sillä ei ole mitään erikseen jaoteltua työtä ja sen onkin nähty suorittavan varsin erilaisia urotekoja.

Jos se soveltuu helposti työskentelemään karjan kanssa, se ei tee siitä vähemmän ihanteellista koiraa lampaille. Sen luontainen ominaisuus on työskennellä intensiivisesti pienestä pitäen, jopa ilman vanhemman koiran opetusta.

Sillä on taipumus olla yhden omistajan koira, johon se on kiintynyt. Huolimatta sen yleisestä, suunnattomasta herkkyydestä, se kestää kovintakin kohtelua omistajaltaan ilman vastustelua; rakkaus työhön hallitsee koiraa yli kaiken!

Liikuttava esimerkki pienestä paimenkoirasta kertoo kuinka se kuoli suojellessaan rohkeasti laumaansa karhulta isännän poissaollessa.

This dog, just as it is, represents a type perfectly adapted to its surroundings: a low centre of gravity, the result of its reduced height, assures it of a maximum of stability on the steep slopes. Its narrow foot, with a thin sole, holds on to the rocks like the rope soles of our canvas shoes. Its hocks, which follow a gentle deviation from the line of its hindquarters, are necessary for climbing up the slopes. (Try walking in the mountains with your toes turned in.)

The texture of its coat, woolly underneath and coarser on top, affords protection against violent dowpours and the low temperatures. Its matchless nervous energy enables it to carry out its harsh job without faltering. Its small size allows its master to feed it parsimoniously.

As for temperament, we are in the presence of a dog of a fairly independent nature, whose distrustfulness is the basis of his character. Not pampered very much, grought up to be hardy, he is generally unapproachable by strangers. He shows a certain amount of caution towards familiar people at home. There is one thing, however, which will make him forget his reserve: when the shrill whistle of the shepherd tells him that it is time for action.

It must be added that the Pyrenean Sheepdog is brave. I have rarely seen one of them refusing to fight something larger and taller than himself. Moreover, being generally fairly pugnacious, he is the challenger. A nimble athlete, he enters into few clinches, but proceeds by a succession of skilful dodges, and spirited and unforeseen attacks, during which a precise bite marks the adversary.

With the Pyrenean Sheepdog all classicism is excluded from his work. He does not have a clearly defined purpose. He is sheepdog to the core, and thet is sufficient for all his tasks. With him there is no recognised division of work, and we have seen him accomplish feats which were quite disparate.

If he adapts easily to working with cattle, he is no less the ideal dog for sheep. His inherent quality is such that he works instinctively from a very young age, even without the help of an older one to teach him.

He has a tendency to know only one master, to whom he remains loyally attached, and although he is generally extremely sensitive, he will endure the harshest treatment from his master without resisting, being dominated above all by the love of his work.

We have had a moving example of a little Pyrenean Sheepdog who was killed by a bear while courageously defending his flock in the absence of his master.
