CMAS P3 (***) course

Our diving club is creating very good chances for making progress in our diving career. Satu and I begun P3 course 18. - 19.5.2002 with three other divers: Mika Hiltunen from Tampereen Urheilusukeltajat and two representatives from Kyröskosken VPK (volunteer fire fighters assosiation) Pasi Kylmäniemi and Timo Lager.

The schedule for theory lessons was very tight. It began Saturday the 18th ten o'clock in the morning. We were taking our fin-swimming practice before that. The lessons treated such subjects as 1) how to plan a diving event, 2) what is technical committee of Finnish Sportdiver's Assosiation doing and how to report abnormalities which occur when diving, 3) how to prepare oneself for diving accidents and how to plan search, rescue and evacuation, and last but not least 4)diving physics, fysiology and dive tables. The day ended around 18.00.

Sunday morning caught us in the pool at 8.00. We practiced how to rescue a person who he is struggling on the surface and also already unconcious in the bottom. We learnt also, how to drag him to the shore alone and with a help from a partner. All this was done with and without basic diving gear (mask, snorker and fins). The rescuing is quite demanding especially without any gear.

The theory lessons continued at 10.30. A real sea captain gave us a glimpse of seamanship and told us how to survive when in charge of a vessel. For me this was a new area of expertice, because I do not have a slightest idea of these marine things. I have only a tiny rowing boat... Before lunch break we were informed about the legal aspects of diving. There are some regulations in different acts, which must be observed. After lunch detailed information of diving gear was given. The purpose was to give us an idea of how regulators and such function, how they may malfunction and how to fix the problem if it is possible. Next three hours went quite rapidly discussing about leadership, individual, group and the duties of a leader. The professional psychologist was able to entangle theory and practice in a clever way to a useful solution.

The day ended with written examination. The theory was over at 18.00. The summer will see us qualifying in practice...
