Third Rate ships 1650-1700

Fourth rate ships 1649-1700

ENGLISH FIRST & SECOND RATES WARSHIP IN 17 th. CENTURY.

( Dimensions : in feet = 304,8mm, and inch = 25,4mm )
-

beam was measured outside of the planking after 1649, and before that inside. The keel lenght was only lenght
measurement before 1677 and gun deck lenght was measured from 1677(some ship gun deck lenght is estimated)
For ships built before 1640s the lenght from stem to sternpost would be roughly equal to keel+beam; for later ships
4/5 beam would be more correct. Gun deck lenght would be equal for stem to sternpost measurement ,
when added some 3.5%.

Up to 1677 the keel was actually measured to the "touch", the point where the inner side of the stem began to rise
From it. After 1677 keel lenght used for calculating tonnage was obtained by dropping a perpendicular from the fore
Side of the stem at the level of the lower wale and taking 3/5 of the beam to represent the fore rake.
This reduced the so-called lenght on the keel to a mere function of the gun-deck lenght and the beam.
Tons and tonnage was calculated c.1628-1648 : keelxbeamxdepth/100, and after that : keelxbeamxhalf beam /94
The depth is usually the perpendicular distance from the lowest point of the breadth line to the upper surface of the keel.

-
NOTICE for list : The draught figures(in depth section) was published in 1689, by Thomas in "Gloria Britannica"
( "D" letter means that). The letter "G" means Girled beam.
In Charles II`s period there are used two keel lenght measured
: the "touch" figure was actual lenght, and the other metod was calculated figure,
letter "C" means that. There are also two basic burden figures : the first has been calculated in a actual keel length,
and the second is calculated in calculated keel length.Ships, which built before 1649 there are two burden figures:
calculated in old , and new metod, see above the formulas.
